Trust board development

The executive board now face the challenge of working alongside an elected Council of Governors. We can help the Trust Board to recognise the challenges ahead and devise strategies to optimise the working relationship.

Trust Boards will want to have the time for reflection and review of their governance arrangements once the membership body is established and the Governor elections underway. It is our experience that new Governors find their new roles daunting. While the legal definition is clear, national guidance is minimal. This gives individual Trusts, Governors and members the opportunity to develop their roles to reflect and respond to the particular issues facing their individual Trust. Trusts will want to ensure that they get the best value from Governors and that in turn, Governors gain fulfillment from their new and voluntary role, after all, they did not sign up just to review and appoint Auditors!

Trust Boards will therefore want to do some early thinking about the ‘definition’ they wish to give to the role and thoughts to the key work streams where Governors and members can add value and contribute to the delivery of Trust objectives. The intention of this will not be to restrict or constrain Governors, but rather to give them an initial framework around which to focus.

Our suggested approach would be:

  • A scoping meeting / discussion with key Trust personnel
  • The delivery of a half-day session by two of our most experienced consultants, comprising a presentation to set the Trust within a national context followed by a facilitated discussion
  • A detailed summary report is then presented.
