Lewisham has the longest running young mayor scheme in London and is currently gearing up to elect it's sixth young mayor. TCC is working hard over the next couple of months with the Youth Participation Team in Lewisham get young people excited and involved so that come September, we can build on the fantastic 49% turnout of last year. TCC pioneered the first young mayor election in Middlesbrough in 2002.Children and young people from across Lewisham vote for one young person to represent them and their views to adult decision makers The election process mirrors adult elections and through this it is anticipated that the shockingly low turnout figures amongst 18-24 year olds will improve in years to come. The elected Young Mayor advises the adult Mayor and has their own budget of £25,000 to spend on activities and schemes that benefit young people.
Throughout June and July, TCC is visiting schools and youth clubs across Lewisham to promote the Young Mayor scheme.
